Blue ray is the next generation disk player on the market delivering up to 50GB of data on a disk. Although it’s the same size as a CD-ROM or a normal DVD, Blue ray disks contain more data. Up to 50GB of data can be burned into a blue ray disk compared with 700MB for CD-ROM and about 9GB for DVD disks.
Keep in mind that blue ray is not the contents of the disk, but what the additional bits brings to the viewer. The current size of blue ray disks is just enough to accommodate high-definition video. With HD standards having a baseline of 720p (for 720 lines of progressive scanning), this is four times more video content than the normal DVD. The sharp contrast can be seen with HD video monitors larger than 21 inches. The hues are sharper and with more clarity inimage with HD compared to normal TV images.
Although 720p is the stated minimum quality, the newest blue ray DVD players can handle up to 1080p, and future developments are also slated to handle higher video quality.
Blue ray also includes requirements for audio. Up to 8 channels of audio are specified in the standard set up for HD appliances, that includes cables, connectors, monitors, projectors and specially blue ray DVD players.
Sony blu-ray dvd players which are out on the market right now may be a somewhat more expensive than normal DVD players, but with the slated phase out of analog standards, digital video is expected to bear the brunt of the sales further.
